5 Days of Apples- Day 1 Applesauce

As you all read I went apple picking last weekend and picked 41 apples. Since I love fall and all the  yummy foods it brings I decided to do 5 days of posting apples recipes showing what I am doing with all the apples I picked.

Applesauce reminds me of being a little kid. I use to eat applesauce all the time as a snack or as dessert with dinner or straight out of the jar. When I got sick and had to take any kind of medicine in pill form my mom would crush them up and hide them in a spoonful of applesauce.- (not the best use of applesauce)

Now I don't really eat it as much as I use to but I do use it as a substitute in baking instead of oil or in my oatmeal for breakfast and the occasional snack sprinkled with a little cinnamon. Last year I searched the internet for a basic applesauce recipe I didn't want to add to much to the apples since I knew that already had natural sugar. I found a recipe on all recipes changed it a little, I absolutely loved it!

  • apples - peeled, cored and chopped (I used about 25-30)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool
I bought this hand dandy apple peeler and corer that made my life so much easier preparing all those apples.

So I set to work cutting and peeling

I cut the apples into quarters and divided them into 2 pots and added 1/4 cup of sugar and 1.5 cups of water. Then let them cook until they became mush. At this point you have 2 choices if you enjoy a little chunky applesauce as I do then you can leave as is. But if you prefer a smoother consistency then you can add it to a blender and blend until it reaches the consistency you desire.  Then divide in to bell jars and boil them for 15 minutes until they seal.

Then enjoy!!
